    • Ernest was born near Lawson, MO, on December 10, 1912, the son of James Porter and Ella Ford Wharton. He attended grade school in Lawson often riding his horse from the family farm south of town to the the school. After the untimely death of his father he moved to Excelsior Springs with his mother and sister in 1925. He graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1930. He attended Kansas City Business College, where he met his future wife, Marjorie Letizg. His first job was as a bookkeeper at the Clay County State Bank, [later] Bank Midwest. He was instrumental in the organization of the Excelsior Springs Savings and Loan, [later] part of North American Savings Bank, and was its first employee. He was an insurance agent and broker and established The Wharton Agency in 1937. He remained active in business for over 60 years while his son Richard assumed active management in 1978. He was also a real estate broker and was active in the local real estate market for many years.

      “He was an active member of Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church for 79 years, where he was Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. He also served his Church as Deacon, being first elected in 1937, and serving numerous terms over 30 years. He was also a Sunday School teacher, Church Treasurer, and a Church trustee. He attended on a regular basis until a month ago. Ernest served his community as a member of many civic boards and was on the Cemetery Board for 40 years. He was manager of operations for Crown Hill Cemetery during most of this time and was responsible for acquiring the ground for and establishing the Crest Hill Cemetery. He also served as President of the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce in 1962-1963. He was named Citizen of the Year for his outstanding civic service in 1969, and was named Citizen of the Year in 2001. He was an active member of Rotary International for 53 years, having served in many capacities, including President of the local club. He had 52 years of perfect attendance and was awarded Rotary's highest honor, a Paul Harris Fellow.” [1]
