Notes |
- “Louella graduated from Dilley High School in 1936 and subsequently attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos for two years. She then transferred to the University of Texas and graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1941. While at the University she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority .
“In March of 1941, she married James Bernard Vine of Bridgeport, Texas. During World War II, they lived in Houston, Texas, where Bernard was called to work in the Houston Shipyard building battleships for the war effort. At the end of the War, they settled in Dilley and raised their family there. Bernard operated Moffetts Store for many years, and Louella taught school in the Dilley Independent School District for thirty-six years.
“Louella was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church in Dilley. She was a Sunday school teacher and served on many committees over the many years that she was in attendance. Being a great supporter of her hometown, Louella served in many civic and social organizations. She was an active member, well into her eighties, of the American Legion Auxiliary, The Huajilla Unit of Texas Retired Teachers, Dilley Chamber of Commerce, and Friends of the Library. Over the years she was a member of Home Demonstration clubs in both Frio and La Salle Counties and was often called to judge 4-H sewing and cooking competitions. She enjoyed many happy times as a member of Dilley and Pearsall bunco clubs and bridge clubs.
“Louella was known for her love of sewing, crafts, and oil painting which she took up in her late sixties. Louella and Bernard both were given the gifts of hospitality and used them by opening their home to host many civic and social functions. Louella especially was always willing to open her home and host, over the years, many bridal showers and baby showers.” [2]
