Notes - E. M. was born and raised in Virginia, remaining there until 1879 when he moved to Texas. He later moved to Oklahoma City where he was in business for about 20 years. He moved to Lubbock, Texas eight years before his death. In Lubbock he engaged in business and owned extensive business property in the city and farm property in the county. He was also a partner with a Mr. Miller in a furniture business in Lawton, Oklahoma. His death occurred in his store in Lubbock as he was talking with two of his sons and O. B. Hewitt. In observance of his death the Lubbock Retail Merchant’s Association ordered all business houses in the city to close promptly at 10 a.m. the morning of his burial and to be remained closed for forty-five minutes.
