Notes |
- Carman received his early education at the school in Clegg, Texas, where the entire faculty was comprised of his mother, father, older brother, and older sister. He graduated from Texas A&M University at the age 19 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He then began a 20-year career in the U.S. Soil Conservation Service at a time in the midst of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. He was stationed Vega, Childress, Clarendon, and Silverton.
He retired from in 1956 in Silverton and began Rhode Pipe Company. He initially installed irrigation systems for area farmers but eventually expanded to municipal and sewer systems across Texas. He changed the name to Rhode Construction and operated out of his headquarters in Lubbock and branch offices in Abilene, Midland, Hillsboro, Dallas, and Amarillo.
He retired from the construction business at the age 85 after which he traveled the world with his wife, Ida. He held a deep Christian faith and was a lifelong Texas Aggie. [1]
