  • Notes
    • John spent 21 years as the secretary of the Nevada Bankers Association and was affiliated with banking in Nevada for 50 years. He bagan his career at the age of 16 as a messenger with the Tootle-Lacy National Bank in his native St. Joseph, Missouri. Four years later he took a position with the First National Bank of Ely. In 1912 he went to the Mason Valley Bank at Mason, Nevada. This bank was a new establishment designed to serve mines in the district as well as the agricultural and livestock ranches of the Mason and Smith valleys. He went with the bank in 1918 when it was moved to Yerlington. He was still serving this bank in 1937 when it was merged with the First National Bank of Nevada. At that time he transferred to First National’s head office in Reno as assistant cashier. He retired with this position from the bank in March, 1956.

John continued to serve as secretary of the state banking association, holding that position at the time of his death. He also was active in other banking associations. He was a state vice president of the American Bankers Association, a member of the ABA nominating committee and vice president of the state bank section. He had also been a deputy state bank examiner. Before becoming secretary of the Nevada association he served as their treasurer and was a member of many association committees. He had also held the offices of secretary, treasurer, vice president and president of the Western States Secretaries.

John was also active in several service organizations. He was a member of Hope Lodge of Masons of Yerlington, a past chancellor commander of Greenfield Temple, Knights of Pythias of Yerlington, a member of Calanthe Temple of Pythian Sisters, a charter member of the Yerlington Rotary club, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

John had been confined to a Reno hospital for ten days, returning home shortly before he died.
