    Military William joined the U.S. Navy in 1953 and served his career in the service. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class (E5) and was killed in enemy territory while he was trying to pilot a helicopter during a rescue mission. It was reported that his aircraft was struck by a surface-to-air missile. His remains were not released by the Vietnamese government until 1982. His unit was based on the USS Oriskany (CVA-34), a World War II-era aircraft carrier.  [2, 3
