He was mustered into service on 13 Sep 1861 at Camp Beauregard in Ellis County. He served 1 month and 15 days before being discharged at Camp Hebert near Hempstead, Texas. On the same day, he was enrolled for a one year period as private in Company B, 12th Texas Cavalry. This was simply a technicality of changing the Texas State Troops into a Confederate unit. Britton was admitted to a General Hospital at Houston on 19 Feb 1862 for an eye infection. He was returned to duty on 27 Feb 1862. He died 7 Jun 1862 from an unknown cause, though it was probably illness. He was then in Arkansas where there was little fighting but much illness.
