    • “Gene had lived in Baytown since 1942 and was a retired teacher and coach from Baytown Junior High School after 34 years of service. He was a member and deacon of Memorial Baptist Church. He was a Hunters Education Instructor. In 1994, he was inducted into the Texas Parks & Wildlife Hunter Education Hall of Fame. In 1998, he received the Hunter Ed Volunteer Instructor Award from Sportsman Conservationists of Texas. May 11, 2006 was declared Walter Gene Norton Day in Baytown. In 2007, Mr. Norton was named the Winchester Hunter Education Volunteer Instructor of the Year. He also received the Darrell Holt ‘Memorial Award’ for Outstanding Dedication and Continued Service on Behalf of Texas Parks & Wildlife Hunter Education Program in 2007. In 2010, he was inducted in the International Hunter Ed Association Volunteer Hall of Fame.

      “In his youth, Mr. Norton was a volunteer firefighter in Baytown. He also attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the Peace Corps, from June 19, 1962 until April 19 1964, as a teacher in Thailand.” [2]
