  • Notes
    • Monroe was shot and fatally wounded on a road outside Hunt, Texas. A passing motorist picked him up, but he died minutes later. Will Orr surrendered himself to Kerrville police after the shooting. Orr was tried but was acquitted by a jury. During his trial Orr claimed self-defense. He testified that when he met Monroe on a neighborhood road, Monroe addressed Orr in a threatening manner, sprang from his horse and reached toward his hip where a pistol handle was visible. Orr responded by firing four or five shots at Wells from the car in which he was riding. [10, 11, 12]
