  • Notes
    • Leslie and Nora Belle Chilton lived nine miles north of Elida, New Mexico shortly after their wedding. There they farmed and raised dairy cattle for three years. Then they homesteaded a section of land 45 miles northwest of Roswell, New Mexico where they built a half dugout to live in. Water came from a large cistern with an earth pond for the range cattle which had replaced their dairy cattle. Leslie was also able to procure a few cowboy jobs on the local ranches, earning a dollar a day.

In 1937 they sold the homestead and moved to Dunlap, New Mexico where they lived for three years. Then they bought a ranch ten miles west of Mountainair, New Mexico, near the community of Abo. However, there was only a big rock barn on the property. The second world war started the day the last papers on the ranch were signed, so no house could be built as materials were frozen. So they lived in the modified barn for the next four years. The ranch house was built in 1945 after building materials were released.

Leslie has served as County Commissioner, County Appraiser, S.C.S. District Supervisor, and Federal Land Bank Director.
