Notes - O. W. was born on the family farm between Warrenton and Round Top. He grew up there, and after completing seventh grade he went away for nine weeks to Southwest Texas Teachers College. He obtained his teaching certificate and began his teaching career at the age of sixteen in a one-teacher school in the Shelby area.
He was elected to the office of District Clerk of Fayette County on the American Party ticket in 1920 and again in 1922. The party disbanded nationally and he and other American Party incumbents ran as Republicans in 1924 but failed to hold office. In 1922 he married Irene Wessels, the daughter of John H. Wessels, also a member of the American Party and Fayette County’s Representative in the Texas Legislature.
O. W. farmed until accepting a job with the Texas Highway Department. He worked for the department until his retirement in 1965. He also raised cattle during this time.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in La Grange. He served as president of the local chapters of the American Association of Retired Persons and Texas Public Employees Association. [2]
