    Military Ernst served as a Gefreiter (equivalent of PFC in the U.S. Army) in Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 239 during World War I. He died of dysentery while in a field hospital in France. He is buried in the German memorial cemetery in Le Cateau in northern France. A memorial service was held for him in Hofen on Sunday, 22 Oct 1916.
