I have not proven that Mark Mayo is the son of Gideon Mayo. However, the number of males living with Gideon in 1820, the use of the name Gideon for one of Mark’s sons, and the use of the name Mark for one of Gideon’s sons, it is probable that Mark is Gideon’s son. In addition, the age difference between Mark and Martha as well as an eight year gap in the ages of children who appear in the 1850 census suggests that Martha may be Mark’s second wife. Looking at the 1830 and 1840 censuses, however, each indicates that Mark’s wife is considerably younger; indeed, Martha fits the categories on each census. Furthermore, it appears that Mark and Martha had a child that was alive for the 1830 census but not for the 1840 census.
