Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Julian MAYO was born about 1829 in Alabama, USA (son of Reuben H. MAYO and Lydia HINOTE); died about 1859.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Laborer
    • Census: 5 Oct 1850, Santa Rosa County, Florida, USA

    Notes:

I believe that Julian Mayo died c1859 as I have not been able to find him after the 1850 census and because I found who I believe to be his widow and children in the 1860 census. The youngest of these children at this time was one year old.

    Census:
    Second Division

Julian married Artemisia HINOTE. Artemisia (daughter of Benjamin HINOTE and Martha Elizabeth WRIGHT) was born about 1837 in Alabama, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Artemisia HINOTE was born about 1837 in Alabama, USA (daughter of Benjamin HINOTE and Martha Elizabeth WRIGHT).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1850: Barbour, Alabama
    • Census: 16 Jul 1860, Santa Rosa County, Florida, USA

    Notes:

Artemisia Hinote is believed to be the wife of Julian Mayo. In the 1860 Santa Rosa County, Florida census an Armisso Mayo, aged 23, is listed with three children, Emily, Frances, and Julian. Armisso is living in the household of a Benjamin and Elizabeth Heinote. The natural conclusion to reach is that Armisso is a daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth and that her husband is either dead or away from home. An examination of the 1850 Barbour County, Alabama census reveals an Artemisia Hinote, aged 14, in the household of Benjamin and Elizabeth. Finally, a group of letters in the possession of Dottie Bowden reveals a known grandchild of Reuben and Lydia Mayo referring to cousins, Emily, Fanny, and Julia Mayo. Thus, I believe that the Mayo that Artemisia married was a son of Reuben and Lydia. Based upon the age of Artemisia and of the sons of Reuben, I believe that the only son Artemisia could have married was Julian Mayo, whom I have not been able to find after the 1850 census.

    Census:
    2nd Division, P.O. Milton

    Children:
    1. 1. Emma Emily MAYO was born on 7 Aug 1855 in Milton, Santa Rosa, Florida, USA; died on 10 Mar 1907; was buried on 11 Mar 1907 in Glenwood Cemetery, Houston, Harris, Texas, USA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Reuben H. MAYO was born about 1797 in Georgia, USA (son of Charles MAYO); died about 1868.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1819: Conecuh County, Alabama (tax list) 1830: Conecuh County, Alabama 1840: Conecuh County, Alabama Feb 1842: Precinct 1, Santa Rosa, Florida Apr 1867 or 1868: Precinct 1, Santa Rosa County, Florida (tax list)

    • Occupation: Log Driver
    • Census: 5 Oct 1850, Santa Rosa County, Florida, USA
    • Census: 8 Jun 1860, Milton, Santa Rosa, Florida, USA

    Notes:

I have determined that R. H. must have died in either 1867 or 1868 as he appears on the Santa Rosa County voters registration list as having registered 21 Apr 1867 or 1868 and as a letter dated Christmas Eve, 1868 from George and Arthusa Edwards to Enoch and Sarah Dyal discusses what to do with property that R. H. left to his children.

    Census:

Reuben married Lydia HINOTE. Lydia was born about 1805 in Georgia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Lydia HINOTE was born about 1805 in Georgia, USA.

    • Occupation: Keeping House
    • Census: 5 Oct 1850, Santa Rosa County, Florida, USA
    • Census: 8 Jun 1860, Milton, Santa Rosa, Florida, USA

    Notes:

At this time I do not have proof that Lydia’s maiden name is Hinote. Several researchers of this family make such a claim. A group of letters which was written from the Mayo family to the Dyal family and which was handed down to Dottie Bowden lends credence to this idea as well.

Benjamin married Martha Elizabeth WRIGHT. Martha was born about 1798 in Georgia, USA; died on 15 Dec 1881. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Martha Elizabeth WRIGHT was born about 1798 in Georgia, USA; died on 15 Dec 1881.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1850: Barbour, Alabama
    • Census: 16 Jul 1860, Santa Rosa County, Florida, USA

    Notes:

In a Feb 1882 letter to her cousin, Mary Etta Dyal, Julia Mayo wrote that “Grandma is dead,” having died on 15th Dec. This could refer to Julia Hinote Mayo or Elizabeth Wright Hinote. It is assumed from earlier letters and census records that Lydia died in the 1860s. Further research of census records for Benjamin and Elizabeth Hinote should help us determine of whom the “Grandma” is referring.

    Census:
    2nd Division, P.O. Milton

    Children:
    1. 3. Artemisia HINOTE was born about 1837 in Alabama, USA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Charles MAYO was born about 1770 in Virginia, USA (son of Mark MAYO and Susannah); died about 1846 in Conecuh County, Alabama, USA.

    Notes:

I have not proven that Charles Mayo is the father of Reuben H. Mayo. However, a review of census records from 1820 to 1850 reveal that Charles, Reuben, John W., and Allen are found very near each other in each census. In addition, James Dyal has collaborated with a Mayo researcher in Florida, Luman M. Mayo. Records that L. M. Mayo sent to James Dyal suggest this same tie, as well as stating that Charles Mayo is the son of Mark Mayo.

Charles moved his family to South Alabama abt 1815.

A Joseph Mayo appears on the 1819 Conecuh County, Alabama tax rolls and on the 1820 Conecuh County Territorial Census (with four males under 21 and one female under 21). He may be either Charles’ son or brother.

    Children:

    2. 4. Reuben H. MAYO was born about 1797 in Georgia, USA; died about 1868.
