Robert J. Moore and Martha Burleson Moore moved to Travis County, Texas in about 1868. They settled on Onion Creek with several small children and a number of loyal former slaves. Friendly Indians would come to the house to trade trinkets for things they wanted. Martha was apparantly so frightened that she would give them whatever they wanted.

- Military: Texas Independence - Served in Capt. Randal Jones' company against Gen. Cos after he enlisted in Fall 1835. He later served in Capt. William B. Travis' company during the Siege of San Antonio and at the Battle of Concepcion. He later enlisted in Capt. Gibson Kuykendall's company at Gonzales in the regiment of Col. Edward Burleson. He did participate in the Battle of San Jacinto because he was among those soldiers furloughed to move families across the Brazos River. He received a bounty warrant for 320 acres for his action in the war.

- Military: War of 1812 - Served in Capt. William Russell's Company of Tennessee Militia. He was Commisary for Andrew Jackson and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. He served as Captain in Peter Perkins' 7th Battalion of Mississippi Territory (Madison County) Militia. He volunteered for service at Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama. James entered the volunteer Army of Texas on 1 Oct 1835 and was honorably discharged on 13 Dec 1835. He served under his son, General Edward Burleson, in the Grass Fight (a part of the Siege of Bexar) on 26 November 1835.
Notes:
James Burleson received a land grant after his move to Texas. The land was located on the east bank of the Colorado River below present-day Bastrop.

Elizabeth Shipman Burleson was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church in Jackson County, Tennessee in the early 1800s. She is first listed in the church minutes in 1802. She applied for a letter of dismissal on the first Sunday in November, 1806.
