He had served for eight months when the company disbanded. In Jacob’s words he then “joined Price’s spy company and we disbanded in the Indian Territory. Then joined Darnell’s Regiment, which was captured at Arkansas Post. I was on sick furlough and after recovery joined Turner’s Company, A. W. Terrell’s Regiment, and remained with them until the close of the War. Was never wounded or taken prisoner. Was elected 2nd Lieutenant of Turner’s Company when it was organized at Bastrop, Texas. Was in the battles of Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Yellow Bayou. Many happenings which took place in the Civil War I could mention, but I find many of them too sad to recall.”

    Notes:

    After the death of his mother, Jacob’s uncle, Jonathan Burleson of Bastrop was appointed guardian over Jacob. However, he requested a different guardian, Aaron Burleson of Webberville, another uncle. This request was granted at the October term, 1857 Travis County probate court. His uncle Aaron sent him to Baylor University at Independence, Texas under the care of Dr. Rufus C. Burleson.

    On October 11, 1864 Jacob was initiated into Gamble Lodge, No. 244, AF&AM, Bastrop, Texas. On November 29, 1870 he entered Pleasanton Lodge, No. 283, AF&AM.

    Jacob entered the Confederate Home on April 7, 1905 as he was disabled due to lung disease.

He served as Captain in Peter Perkins' 7th Battalion of Mississippi Territory (Madison County) Militia. He volunteered for service at Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama. James entered the volunteer Army of Texas on 1 Oct 1835 and was honorably discharged on 13 Dec 1835. He served under his son, General Edward Burleson, in the Grass Fight (a part of the Siege of Bexar) on 26 November 1835.

    Notes:

    James Burleson received a land grant after his move to Texas. The land was located on the east bank of the Colorado River below present-day Bastrop.
