    • Military: War of 1812 - Private in Perkins' Mississippi Militia. He was listed on the muster roll of Capt. James Burleson's Mississippi Territory Militia against hostile Creeks in 1813. He later served in Fleming H. Hodges' Tennessee Militia. He also commanded a company of militia in Howard County, Missouri, then served as Colonel of First Regiment in Saline County, Missouri. Edward also served in the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. He was elected colonel of the only regiment organized under Stephen F. Austin at Gonzales on 10 Oct 1835. When Austin was sent by the provisional government as commissioner to the United States, he took over the command. On 18 Dec 1835, as the army was encamped outside Bexar, he was elected to succeed Philip A. Sublett as colonel of the infantry. Edward was elected colonel of the 1st Regiment of Texas Volunteers at Gonzales on 12 Mar 1836. He commanded that unit at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1837, he was elected brigadier general of the militia. The following year, he was appointed colonel of the first regiment of infantry of the regular army. In Jul 1839, he commanded the regular army in the Cherokee War against Chief Bowles. In 1840, he raised a volunteer company to pursue Indian raiders, arriving too late to participate in the Battle of Plum Creek on 12 Aug 1840.

    Notes:

    Edward Burleson arrived in Texas from Tennessee in 1830, receiving title to a league of land in Stephen F. Austin's second colony in present-day Bastrop County. He served as a delegate to the Convention of 1833 at San Felipe, representing the Mina Municipality.

    He was a member of the House of Representatives from Bastrop County in the Republic of Texas' Second Congress in 1837 and 1838. He was a member of the Senate during the Third Congress of 1838-1839. Edward was elected vice-president of the Republic of Texas on 6 Sep 1841, being inaugurated on December 10. He lost the election for president to Anson Jones in 1844. He served as a senator in the State of Texas' First and Second Legislatures from 1846-1849, being elected president pro tempore. After moving to Hays County and settling near the spring which is the source of the San Marcos River, he represented the Sixteenth District in the Third and Fourth Legislatures, serving as president pro tempore, until his death in 1851 at the home of N. C. Raymond in Austin.

    The Austin Masonic Lodge conducted his funeral services. Guy M. Bryan delivered the eulogy.

    Burleson County, Texas was named in his honor on 24 Mar 1846.
