Generation: 2

  1. 3.  DYAL (son of John DYAL and Mary TODD).

    Notes:

UPDATE: We formerly had favored a hypothesis that our Enoch Dyal was a grandson of John and Mary Todd Dyal through one of their daughters. This hypothesis was reached because in the early days of Y-DNA testing James Derald Dyal and a known descendant of the south Georgia/Florida Dyal clan were both tested through FamilyTreeDNA. There was not a match between these two testers. This led us to believe that Enoch could have 1) taken the Dyal name, possibly to avoid military service or something negative in his life, 2) was adopted by a Dyal family, or 3) was born to a Dyal woman (an NPE or non-paternal event). Forward to 2018 when Herman Dyal, Jr., received Y-DNA and autosomal DNA test results. His Y-DNA did not match any other Dyal testers, but we did find out that his Y-DNA carried a particular marker, haplogroup R-L226, that has a specifically Irish background. In addition, the autosomal results showed several matches to testers who were a Dyal or a Dyal descendant, specifcally from the south Georgia/Florida clan. This led us to favoring the NPE hypothesis. However, in November 2023 Herman received a new Y-DNA and Big-Y match who is a Dyal descending from John and Mary Todd Dyal. This result now proves our Dyal line takes a male descent from the Dyal family that settled in southern Georgia in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. However, this takes us back to the early days of tracking the genealogy of our Enoch Dyal: how does he fit into the south Georgia Dyal clan?

PREVIOUSLY: The link between John and Mary Dyal and Enoch as grandparents and son cannot be proven. However, DNA analysis supports a familial link to the John Dyal family. Y-DNA testing of Enoch Dyal’s descendants show that he is not a match to any Dyal men, but autosomal DNA analysis shows a strong connection to the Dyal families of the Wiregrass region of Georgia. The most likely scenario is an out-of-wedlock birth where a son of an unknown male and a Dyal woman was given the Dyal surname. It is my opinion that Enoch is most likely born to such a union. DNA evidence also supports a connection to the Todd family of Liberty County, Georgia, of which Mary Todd Dyal is a member. It appears most likely that Enoch was born to a daughter of John Dyal and Mary Todd, however the two known daughters (Catherine and Winneford) are likely two old, and in the case of the latter, already married with children by the time of Enoch’s birth. While there is a chance Enoch’s mother is Mary, the eldest daughter of George Washington Dyal and Sarah Polk, there is currently no DNA link to the Polk family. At this time, I think the most likely connection is to an unknown daughter of John and Mary Dyal born after 1792.
