He has done postgraduate work at New York Eye and Ear Hospital of the New York Postgraduate Medical School and the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

    “When a year old [Obediah] moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Whitesboro TX. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1893. In 1895 he married Miss Nannie Field at Nocona TX where he and his brother, Mel, were in the grocery business. He and his wife moved to Fleetwood in 1898 which continued to be his home except from 1919 to 1924, when he was in the grocery business in Ryan.

    “He was postmaster at Fleetwood until he was retired when he reached the age of 70 years. He also had a general merchandise store and gin at Fleetwood. He was a charter member of the Masonic Territorial Lodge at Terral and also a charter member of the lodge when it was reorganized after statehood. He had a life membership in the Terral Lodge.”

    After graduating from Hill’s Business College in Waco he went to work as a bookkeeper at the Schumacher Grocery Company in Houston. The year after he was married and upon the advice of his doctor, he and Ellie moved to a ranch near Uvalde. After his health improved they moved to Coupland where he managed the Hellmuth-von Rosenberg Store. In 1916 he made the final move to Waco where spent most of his life in the cotton business. He was associated with the A. N. Denton Cotton Co. for many years. He was assistant county auditor in Waco in the early 1940s. He also at various times had the Chevrolet-Paige Agency and distributed Quaker State Motor Oil, but he returned to the cotton business. After Ellie, his wife, died, he married Florence Gibbons of Corpus Christi.

    Hermann became a Mason at Galveston in 1915, joined Scotish Rite the same year and was a charter member of Waco Consistory of Scottish Rite. He was commander of Waco Commandery No. 10, Knights Templar in 1937, and was potentate of Karem Shrine Temple in 1939. He was a member of Waco Lodge No. 92, A. F. and A. M., and received his 50-year awards from the Grand Lodge of Texas, the Grand Chapter and the Consistory in 1965. He was captain of the Shrine Patrol drill team in the 1920s and headed many Shrine committees over the years. He joined Waco Rotary Club in 1926 and for more than 50 years was a member of First Presbyterian Chruch, where he was a deacon and elder.

    Ellie attended Texas Presbyterian College where she majored in mathematics and played volleyball and tennis. Following graduation she worked at her father’s store as a bookkeeper. She was married on her 21st birthday and moved with her husband to Uvalde, Coupland, and in 1916 to Waco. She was an avid reader of items from light fiction to heavy non-fiction. It was this interest that caused her to become a staunch supporter of the Waco Public Library. She was also a booster of Baylor University, supporting and attending cultural events brought to Waco by the university.

    In addition to reading, Ellie enjoyed handwork, including embroidery, knitting, and crocheting. She lived near an old ladies’ home and she often had several of these women spent time in her home. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Mothers’ Club of the schools and organizations with which her daughter was associated. She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star and wa a past Worthy Matron of the Waco Chapter No. 7. At the time of her death she was District Deputy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Texas.
